Skeletons at Herculaneum

Items 2 and 3 on the hazelh Naples hit-list are Vesuvius and Herculaneum. We followed the instructions in our guide book for visiting both on the same day:

1. Catch the train from Naples to Ercolano
2. Take the tourist shuttle bus to Vesuvius on a combined bus-volcano ticket
3. Return to Ercolano on the shuttle bus
4. Visit Herculaneum
5. Return to Naples on the train

This proved to be excellent advice. We had a wonderful morning discussing geology as we marched up to the crater of the volcano, and on the (less strenuous) return downhill to the shuttle bus. Our afternoon visit to the ruined Roman town of Herculaneum was even more fascinating, especially with the knowledge that we accrued yesterday from our visit to the archeological museum.

On the way back to the station at Ercolano we stopped off for late lunch/early supper at a local pizzeria. 'Pudding' was (another) ice cream from a roadside café not far from our hotel.

The skeletons in my blip are of citizens of Herculaneum who didn't manage to evacuate the city in time to escape the destruction of Vesuvius in AD79. They are crowded together sheltering in boat sheds, presumably awaiting rescue. This is actually a quite recent find, from 1982.

In my extra Mr hazelh shows his delight at having reached the top of Vesuvius.

Exercise today: walking (26,558 steps).
