St. Kilda Pier

This is where we headed this evening. A few miles south of Melbourne city centre, St. Kilda Pier is the place to spot fairy penguins (Little Penguins - Eudyptula minor) at dusk, when they leave the sea and come ashore to overnight in rocky crevices. (One pair - who loved each other very much - wasted no time on arrival on dry land before they were busy making new baby penguins!) Of course, as it was going dark, and flash photography is forbidden so as not to disturb the colony, my photos are very grainy, but see Extras as a record of the evening.

My other Extra shows just one of many wonderful views from on high when we took a ride on the Melbourne Star (an enormous ferris wheel along the lines of the London Eye). If you spot the yellow, angled pole to the right of the freeway, it marks the gateway to Melbourne city, and is known locally as the cheese stick.

Suffice it to say: Another lovely day!
