Wast Water

Our last day here so we went West, and, having negotiated Wrynose and Hardknott passes, drove up to Wasdale head. We pottered a little here, admiring the complexity of a multitude of drystone walls, enclosing the Herdwick sheep, any shade of colour between grey and moorit, with their black lambs. We explored the church of St Olaf, a lovely little church with its open-trussed roof and pretty wrought iron wall-lights.

From there we drove to Seascale, shunning ice cream for a fine sandwich lunch, then a stroll on the expanse of sand. Down the coast a short distance brought us to Ravenglass, the terminus of the narrow-gauge railway, watching a double-header (Katie and The Bug) arrive and leave, then River Mite arrive.

It was time for us to make our way back over the fell tops to think about the journey tomorrow, which may be considerably cooler than we have enjoyed over the past few days.
