Frachadil

After the wonderful events of yesterday we stayed the night at Frachadil, a superb B&B  at Calgary which looks out to the small isles and beyond to Skye.

Andy & Jane who own it are artists and have been there for 30 years, but are moving into Dervaig later in the summer.   I am sorry we wont be able to go back as it was a very comfortable and pleasant place , in superb surroundings,  and they are very good hosts.

The house has a long history but from 1959 it was owned by R A B Butler, the Tory politician  and, by some accounts, the best Conservative Prime Minister the UK never had.

Butler, with his second wife Molly and their many children (six for each of them from their previous marriage) , apparently  loved the place and spent many happy times there.

Molly records that in her memoirs , published as recently as 1987.   Andy and Helen had kindly  left a copy  beside our bed last night and the story of their family holidays in the place made nostalgic reading.

The book however is very much of its time and her account of Mull makes virtually no mention of any local person who isn't a servant or a ghillie.

We live (fortunately) in change times , but how changed it is sometimes hard to appreciate until you look back  at accounts like this.

My extra pictures show something of the view from the house, which illustrates how special it is.
