Sincil Dike

It's nice when things work out. Today Milly was going back to university in Lincoln and I had a meeting in Bury St Edmunds, so what would have been a nine hour round trip for a half hour meeting took on another dimension and didn't seem quite such a chore.

The end of the road on which Milly lives crosses Sincil Dike, a waterway that helps prevent flooding by taking water from the River Witham and reintroducing it further downstream. Apparently it dates with certainty back to the 13th century but might even be Roman in origin. It's one of those stretches of water that makes me wish I owned a kayak (and had the necessary competencies to pilot one).
