Archaeological Aperitif

Some people have an aperitif before going out to dinner, we did a bit of archaeology! Invited to supper by M she added the enticing offer of her partner showing us around the ancient ruined church and its graveyard, for he knew things! And bring trowels! Here we are are gently investigating (one of us is an archaeologist) the surface of a grave which had long vanished under metres of grasses. It belonged to a former parish priest, dead many many years, who was once renowned for his healing. His grave became a site of pilgrimage and was much revered. Pilgrims would leave bottles as tokens of thanks, for he was known to enjoy a wee drop. The whole surface seemed littered with fragments of glass and ceramics.I knew about him but had no idea where his grave was so this was fascinating.  Rather sadly, possibly, part of his skull, possibly, is in the little niche (now containing a rosary) and was also considered a holy relic. T's mother would regularly visit the grave but the custom seems to have died out now. We carefully covered over what we had revealed.
Then it was back to M's for a delicious supper with big views across the bay. A most enjoyable evening.
