Wayville Farmer's Market

Today I felt that a visit to our Xmas Sunday Wayville Farmer's Market would make a great blip. As is the norm, on every Sunday morning around 8.30am, Paladian will say "I've got to get out of here - I'm off to the market now". The biggest farmers' market in the Adelaide area is held in the inner city suburb of Wayville, every Sunday morning from 9am to 1pm. I normally attend every few weeks - if Paladian can drag me away from my computer!

The stall holders are restricted to selling produce grown and/or manufactured in South Australia only - and this ranges from meat, fish, vegetables and fruit, as well as some manufactured items, like cheese, honey, bread, chocolate, organically produced wine, vegetarian patties and bush tucker flavoured ice-cream.

We love the fact that the stallholders are the growers and producers, and most are passionate about their produce and love to chat if you ask a question. This means that we can support our own home state, and eat the very best food money can buy without spending a fortune.

Because Paladian is an annual member of the market, we get 10% discount off every purchase plus free parking. This makes the whole experience even more affordable. Seen even JUICIER here!
Shown in order from nearest the camera - peaches, apricots and nectarines.

Held in the grounds of the Royal Show, most Sundays it gets pretty packed, with maybe 5,000 people attending on average over the 4 hour period. However, this Sunday being right before Christmas the number swells to at least double that. We got there just as the gates opened, and many thousands of people flooded in, and the aisles were filled in an instant. Probably 5000 people were there by 9:15am.

It's a wonderful place, especially at this time of year, with fresh fruit sampling and all the best soft fruit you can imagine. We are in the middle of the cherry season, not to mention strawberries, peaches, apricots, plums and nectarines.

We eat a huge amount of fruit as you may have gathered. There were so many wonderful, tempting items on sale, I have made a small BLOG of some of the scenes you might enjoy seeing. Hope you enjoy these extra photos.

The best thing about the Wayville market is that everyone is so good humoured. It is a party atmosphere with no pushing or shoving in the aisles, no displays of temper, even though trolley collisions are plentiful. No trolley rage at this market! Paladian predicted that many stalls would be sold out long before the 1pm close of business.

We left at about 9.40 or maybe a tad later, laden to the rafters with all our fresh food "sorted" for the big day. Glad we went early as it is around 40C today.

Back on July 31st I blipped a shot of some red chillies bought from this market. My blip today from the farmer's market was long overdue!
