Northern Diamondback Terrapin

Visited Janes Island State Park just outside of Crisfield, MD this afternoon. These two handsome turtles were in a large tank and seemed to be greatly enjoying each other's company. They were fun to watch and take photos of.
NDTs are the only turtle that live in the saltwater marsh. They were once hunted almost to extinction in the 1920's. Since then their populations have somewhat recovered. Commercial harvest in Maryland of the Northern Diamondback Terrapin was banned 2007.
These two are both males, named Ike and Tina. They were captured in crab traps in 2005 and kept in captivity by a private citizen who donated them to Janes Island Nature Center in 2009.
***8 more day 'till Fletcher comes home :)
