Life in Newburgh on Ythan

An unfortunate encounter

It being a beautiful sunny day we took ourselves off to the nearby Pitmedden formal garden.

The garden was created in 1675 by Sir Alexander Seton. Today, my eye was caught by this weather vane which commemorates the occasion when in 1639 Sir Alexander's  father John Pitmedden had an unfortunate encounter with  a cannonball. John Seton was commanding a detachment of Royalist troops at the battle of the Bridge of Dee when while riding along the riverside with Lord Aboyne he was shot through the heart by a cannonball, at the age of 29.
