Beach day

Our plans of getting up early went out of the window, leading us to remind ourselves that we are on holiday after all, and unlike most of our other ventures, relaxing is allowed this time!

After late breakfast we decided to try and find the bus to get to the Corralejo dunes. The Dunes are a national park, and so expansive I saw them from the plane on the way here. The TUI rep had told us the bus number and the vague direction so off we went. We were very happy to find the stop, which also happened to be the right one and we were off. The bus stops by one of the two giant eyesore Rui hotels that they managed to build before the island could introduce the protected status. However a few steps past and the enormity of the beach becomes clear, all is well again. The sand is pale - almost paler than my ridiculously white skin, and the sea is absolutely crystal clear. You could almost imagine you were in the Caribbean.
We paid for loungers and an umbrella and settled in for the afternoon. I still burnt, despite being under the shade of the umbrella, as per usual in strange patches meaning that even when it fades it just looks weird. Current sunburn count: one foot, opposite wrist (from holding a book I’ve realised), chest (standard), small patch on back of one arm.

After briefly going in the sea (too rough to swim), we lazed about for a good while reading and burning, with an ice cream for good measure. On the way back we were waiting for a bus for quite a while, with a lot of other people, and decided after a while to walk and get a taxi. Typically as soon as we decided that, we saw the bus arrive. €6 euros in a taxi wasn’t exactly too galling though.

After another couple of hours with the free pouring cava, and the wind blowing yet another of Rich’s unattended drinks almost into my lap, we decided to get to dinner early. It was Canaries night, tried a goat stew - tasty but too many bones - and the local goats cheese which was a highlight :). Also sampled the mysterious liquid in jugs which turned out to be a rather poor attempt at sangria, but perfectly palatable. Added to the list of acceptable drinks

We went for a n evening jaunt into Corralejo later, deciding which looked like the nicest bars to go in if we could be bothered. We have a few possibilities for the coming week!

Drink of the day: Cava
