Giant Sequoia at Big Trees State Park

A sort drive up highway 4 just east of Arnold is Calaveras Big Trees State Park. Located here are sequoia that have grown for over 2,000 years and extend upwards of 300 feet (90 meters) tall. The diameter of the trunk is in excess of 30 feet. The size and majesty of these trees is awe inspiring. A view towards the top is included in the extras.

The trees were discovered in the spring of 1852 when Augustus R. Dowd was tracking a wounded grizzly bear through unfamiliar territory. No one originally believed his story of how large the trees were. This state park is now the most visited park in California, with folks from all over the world coming to see these giants of the forest. If you are ever in the vicinity, Big Trees Park is definitely worth taking time to visit. All the pathways are handicapped accessible, and the hikes are on generally flat terrain.
