Castelmola

First full day in Taormina. We took the bus up to Castelmola. The views from the bus were amazing, So was the driver, continuous hairpin bends where the bus had to occupy the whole road to manage the turn. The drop to the side of the bus was not one to be contemplated.

When we got off the bus there was a steep climb to the village and the castle, though a fairly short climb. My step count does not give me sufficient credit for the number of stairs.

When we were back in town we noticed everywhere was covered in a sandy black dust. Later we realised we were also covered in the same sandy black grit. On the rooftop terrace of the hotel we could see the red lava of Mt Etna. The volcano is having one of its periodic eruptions and the wind is blowing the cloud over Taormina.

Although the mountain is quite far away it is quite spectacular to see the red lava flows even from so far away,
