A day in the life

Woodstack

My landlord is making a traditional woodstack. There are several models, this one is pretty simple, resembling the stone fences I've described here earlier. You stack a framework of carefully stacked logs and then fill the inside space with logs in a heap. When it's ready you leave it to dry outside under a tarpaulin for a year and then bring the wood into the woodshed, ready for use.

The heaped up wood represents many, many hours of work. Felling the trees, chopping them in long lengths in the forest and then bringing it home, preferably in the winter when the ground is hard enough to drive on. After that, in early spring, you need to cut it to lengths fitted for your stove and then cleaving the logs, stacking them to dry and then moving it into the woodshed, stacking it again. In the end, all you have to do is to go to your woodshed to fetch some wood to heat your house or make a cosy fire.
