Brough of Birsay

Packed up the last things and left Pierowall in time for the 09:00 boat to Kirkwall. A lovely crossing sailing past the isles on a very quiet boat. As we approached Kirkwall we could see an enormous cruise liner tied up at Hatston so we reckoned the town would be busy.

Not having been over to the stones at Stenness or the Ring of Brodgar for quite a few years we decided to head west. But it was just so busy. I've been lucky enough to wander round these special places when no-one else has been there so I can understand why people want to visit. And the liners must bring so much business to the islands but honestly I didn't want to join the crowds. So on we went to Birsay where firstly the tearoom was blessedly quiet and then we had a wonderful walk on the cliffs. This is the view looking back towards the Brough of Birsay which is a tidal island right in the north west corner of the Orkney mainland. The tide was in so we couldn't cross but the cliff walk was lovely with springy grass and wildflowers covering the ground. For some reason we found ourselves back at the tearoom for round two.

Then it was into Kirkwall for some last minute shopping. As predicted the street was heaving. After being in the Westray bubble for a week I had instant sensory overload so goodness knows how I'll fare when I'm back in the central belt.

Now on board the Pentalina bound for Caithness. We have one more night of holiday to anticipate before a very long drive tomorrow.

As always feeling sad to leave Orkney but what a brilliant time we've had.
