Winsford Salt Mine

This is the view across the River Weaver to the Winsford Salt Mine that supplies the majority of the road salt in the country during the winter months.

The mine is the size of 700 football pitches and stretches to 100 miles underground. The consistent temperature and humidity and the fact that they are naturally free from ultraviolet light, rodents and flooding mean that they are ideal for storing documents. Millions of documents are stored here including part of the National Archives.
