Went to an excellent talk by Kevin Anderson from the Tyndall Centre on climate change. The talk was excellent, not particularly optimistic but for a change realistic. We can have a go at sorting out the climate mess if we start right now. Net zero is no good as it passes the buck to the future. Climate changes is a resource distribution issue and a question of fairness. In the UK if the top 10% (our elite) reduced their CO2 emissions to what the average UK citizen emits and the remaining 90% of the population kept going as before UK emissions would be reduced by 1/3. We need to mobilise labour and resources to deal with climate change rather than further enrich the ones at the top. If Scotland continues as it does now its CO2 budget (to stay below 2 degrees C) will be used up in 5 to 7 years. We need to reduce our emissions by 10-15% every year to be around 80% of today's emissions in 2030. This includes emissions from transport and aviation. We know where to start and just need to get going. CO2 is a rationing issue. He didn't have much good to say about traditional media. Social media can help even though it comes with a lot of problems as well.
