Today was the grand opening of the new estanquet run by the village social club. A local builder has been working for the last 6 months on transforming the ruin behind our house into a charming little bar. The day got off to a good start as EDF did not turn up for their appointment on Friday to connect the electricity. So a cable had to be run from a nearby house to supply the fridges. This didn’t hamper the festive mood anyway, since we were all outside and only ventured into the gloom to admire the gleaming bar fixtures.

Musical entertainment provided by Espèce de Fanfare, previously seen here. And more of the irresistible brass reflections in the extra. The rosé was soon flowing, soaked up with supplies of pizza, quiche, and roast pork sandwiches. I had invited all of my French-English conversation group to come alongfor franco-occitan immersion instead of having the usual session, in the knowledge that I would be in no mood to do it after lunch. Curiously only the members who live in our village turned up …

We went back home for a bit of a rest before going back out to S and R’s for more rosé, this time with various edible offerings brought by guests, plus grilled sausages and chilli con carne. It was plenty warm enough to sit out on the terrace till late. A nice convivial day — we did get home before dark, as we needed to be up early for tomorrow’s big adventure.
