day 4 - rain

It was kind of stormy here this morning but the guys showed up to work at 8 am. They worked for about an hour before it started really pouring down rain and they gave up after that and left, apologizing. I don't blame them! While here, they were concentrating on preparing the floor of the pergola to receive the pavers. This is where we will have an outdoor dining table and chairs. To prepare the area they add dirt, smooth it out, level it with special tools, add special sand that the pavers go on top of, set up string lines to keep their building even . . . it is quite a job!

One of the guys had already built the special retaining wall -the one that you see here, to keep this area level even though the ground slopes towards the river. A more detailed view here. Pavers will go on top of the wall and the dirt/sand, filling in the entire area inside the 6 posts. The posts will eventually have grape vines growing on them and up and over the roof of the pergola, which is not in place yet! The circle of pavers from day 3 is out of sight to your right. You can peek at the entire project here. My blips on the tropical transformation:

day 1 - remove the stumps

day 2 - paver progress

day 3 - the design grows
