The importance of a wasp's nose

I've noticed the wasps are quite active at the moment but not too willing to hang around for a photo. I was plumping for a picture of cow parsley this morning when I spotted this chap might be up for a portrait.

Although he seems to have rubbed his nose spot off, I'm fairly certain (but, as usual, never 100%) that this little guy is a tree wasp. It seems not to matter about the nose disappearing as they don't actually have one.  After watching its abdomen pulsating and wondering whether it was in fury, I've discovered it's simply breathing as they take in air through tiny pores in their body. I guess it could have been heavy angry breathing.

We tiptoed away.

Loved that you loved a blue field as much as me - thank you :)
