Marianne

One of the symbols of the French Republic, she wears the Phrygian cap.  (Emancipated slaves in Rome wore a similar cap to show that they were free)  In 1848 she was chosen to represent the ideals of the French republic.  She represents 'la Patrie' or homeland from which you get the word Patriotism.  She is found on many french stamps and on the old coinage  - francs - and on the reverse side of French euros.
