Cranes at dawn

Back on the bike again today as the rain of yesterday seems to have stopped. On arrival at the inpatient unit, the sun was about to rise above the trees and clouds. This photo was taken from the deck outside the staff lunch room. Behind the cranes on the right is the flat topped cone of Takarunga, which was called Mount Victoria by the British colonisers.

Takarunga was formed by the fire-fountaining of frothy scoria from a central crater. Takarunga means the "hill standing above", referring to it being the highest volcanic cone on the North Shore of Auckland. An important Maori Pa was sited on this cone.
