Sous vide prime strip streak with green peppercorns, green beans with tomato and almond, and chard risotto. Wine: Sean Thackrey Orion 2015.

An excellent dinner, and an amazing wine. The chard risotto (a further chapter in the annals of “how many things can I do with ___ from the CSA) was a great success.

The wine was fantastic. It is the flagship wine by a rather eccentric winemaker in northern California; I have been very curious to try it since seeing it on Oz and James’s Big Wine Adventure. It is an ancient field blend of mostly Syrah varieties with some indigenous grapes—Thackrey believes it to include some northern Rhone varietals that were brought to California before Phylloxera eradicated them in France.

Dinner was briefly and disconcertingly interrupted by an earthquake, but it didn’t do any damage, but only rattled our things and nerves. (Fortunately, the epicenter is was far away in the desert.)
