There Be Whales Here!

Jamie drove me to Byron Bay today, once a "hippy" town which is now extremely high rent and is home to people such as Nicole Kidman, Chris Hemsworth, Richard Branson and Val Kilmer. The town clings to the pretence of being a hipster haven, but the wealth (no pun intended) of exclusive fashion shops and luxury homes makes that facade pretty hard to believe in. The hippies have evolved into capitalists. We drank a latte in a cafe with a huge CND logo on the roof. With some difficulty, we managed to find a shop that sold the Byron Bay Cookies which Kazuko requested as a souvenir.

From Byron Bay we drove up to a lighthouse which marks the most easterly point of Australia. Rachel had said that I might be able to see whales swimming there, but on the way to Byron Bay Jamie said that was unlikely because they are most often seen in November. In the end, it turned that Rachel was right because we saw about six whales in total. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get a decent picture because they suddenly become extremely elusive when cameras are pointing at them.
