The Old Forge (Wednesday 17th July 2019)

This is the first time this black spidery plant has flowered in the garden, taking me by surprise when it appeared overnight. It turns out to have tiny harebell-like flowers and apparently will form black berries later in the season. It is Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrascens' , native to Japan, and most commonly known as Black Mondo Grass but is also called Black Dragon, Ebony Knight, Arabicus or Black Lily-Turf.

Sandy Denny went all the way back to the Ink Spots in 1940 for this single, taken from from Like An Old Fashioned Waltz, but made it completely her own.
