A cockerel's step

A cockerel's step

Every day, after the shortest,
he'd look out
across the Vale of Afan
and catch the dying embers
from winter's pale sun.

"Cam ceiliog,"
he'd say in Welsh;
then, catching my eye,
he'd stretch out his palm
and say

"A cockerel's step,
every day the sun gains
the length of
a cockerel's step."
