Stripping

I could not leave Mere without showing you the best example of remains of the mediaeval strip lynchets that are visible from the road to the Deverills (a series of villages bearing the name Deverill). Do look in large for the detail.

They are a form of terraced cultivation found on steep slopes, always in the form of flat ledges cut into the hillside, although it is not known why such arduous work was undertaken, nor the crops that were cultivated.
