USS North Carolina

Started my day off by having my 6 month dental cleaning and check up this morning. Got a good report so don’t go back until January.

A front came through last night and so for a couple of days at least we will have cooler weather. Also didn’t need to water the plants as plenty of rain last night.

Tonight, as part of the “team building” with Kent’s division at work, we had the honor of being able to eat on the battleship USS North Carolina.

Things were set up for us in the Ward Room and Middle of the Isle catered the food. It was a very pleasant evening and we were allowed to explore the ship as we pleased.

During World War II, USS North Carolina participated in every major naval offensive in the Pacific area of operations and earned 15 battle stars.

In the Battle of the Eastern Solomons in August of 1942, the Battleship’s anti-aircraft barrage helped save the carrier ENTERPRISE, thereby establishing the primary role of the fast battleship as protector of aircraft carriers. One of her Kingfisher pilots performed heroically during the strike on Truk when she rescued ten downed Navy aviators on 30 April 1944. In all, USS North Carolina carried out nine shore bombardments, sank an enemy troopship, destroyed at least 24 enemy aircraft, and assisted in shooting down many more.

We are very privileged to have her berthed here in Wilmington as a State Memorial to all those that fought in WWII
