Rousay, day 2

On the beach before 8am! And the sun is still shining!

Went over to the north east of the island and walked round Faraclett Head. It took us a couple of hours and there were terrific cliffs and stunning views out over to Westray and Sanday, then as we came round the corner, to Egilsay off the east coast. Sunny and warm but with enough of a breeze to make it perfect for walking.

Lots of wonderful little heathland flowers, bog asphodel, grass of parnassus, devil's bit scabious, ling, St John's wort and many others. We were harried by a bonxie, Great Skua, up on the very top. A huge bird, and quite intimidating! Lots of painted lady and meadow brown butterflies too.

We were all pretty exhausted at the end of it, but a super walk. Called in at the local shop and bought ginger beer! The only shop on the island, and it sells just about everything, including fuel, gas cylinders and plants!

A leisurely afternoon in the sun, reading and knitting and trying to avoid the flies!

These old farm buildings are covered in lichen and look super in the sunshine.

A great day.
