Dig This Wasp

Lovely dogwalk in perfect conditions. My blip was to be Frankie dog trotting through the ripe wheat Theresa-like. Until I saw the very soft image on screen. Couldn't understand why it wasn't sharp at first and then I noticed that the protective filter on my 400mm was covered with mud. :)

I spotted this unusual insect on a hogweed umbel this afternoon. I noticed that it had a white v-shaped mark on its face and tried to capture that. It was windy and it was very active so I chose a fast shutter speed, which reduced the already shallow depth of field. I think it could be one of the 110 species of digger wasps that we have in the UK.

PS I noticed that knowledgeable natural history specialist and entomologist @iancbeavis on Twitter had posted a image showing a digger wasp similar to the above this morning (1st August). I consulted him using an image I had taken of the complete creature and he said, "Definitely an Ectemnius, and probably lituratus."
