Blyth's Hornbill

This gorgeous bird lives at Linton Zoo, and every time I go it is sitting on the same perch in its enclosure. I imagine it would like some company. Some astonishing facts:

Females make their nest in a hollow standing tree, and then build a wall to close all but the smallest of openings. The male brings food to the brooding female and youngsters, passing it through the tiny hole. The female will remain sealed in and completely dependent on the male for food until the youngsters fledge.

Also, the bony crest is hollow and amplifies their calls.

Today was very blustery and showery, but thankfully my bike rides, zoo visit and eating out this evening at a pub and taking a walk were all dry.
