Shrine #2

A shrine to Enrique Duarte is seen along Arizona highway 77 near Oracle Junction. This cross is nearly seven feet tall and built of welded steel. Enrique's name is welded in place within the frame of the cross. It is decorated with sunflowers and deer, perhaps because many deer roam this area.

Before I arrived at this location, a car was parked alongside the road. After taking seven exposures. I drove back to see if any help was needed. A young lady got out and remarked that she had run out of gas and that her father was on the way.

We talked about shrines and I wondered how someone could be killed on a straight stretch of four lane highway. The young lady didn't know about Enrique, but she said that another shrine ahead was for a motorcycle rider that had been hit by a sleeping driver.

Each of these shrines has a story to tell and they show the sorrow and dedication of families.

Soon a large Septic Tank Pumper drove up. The father works for a plumbing company.

Gas had arrived.
