Ancient steps

We were out at Sidmouth today with our friend and two of her children.  We arrived just as it started to rain.  Fortunately this didn't last for long and we settled down to a day on the beach with the sun coming out soon after.

On the way back we walked up a very old set of stairs scarcely visible in the photo but they are there. These steps were originally cut into the cliff in the mid 19th century. (I think its these ones). This then developed into a cart track used to transport lime (brought in by boat from places such as Branscombe) to the lime kiln which is now a tea room.  The extra shows the more recent ladder known as Jacobs Ladder constructed to get down to the beach in an easier way.
