Thwaite Mills

Another great day out for the bus pass walkers!
We were joined by the Kirklees branch (ValC and Mr C) and the Calder Valley branch (Midgehole Dave and Bezzie Pet) for a visit and a guided tour of this mill on an island in the river Aire.  Not a textile mill, as is usual in this area of Yorkshire, but a watermill where chalk, flint and China clay were milled.
Until 1976, when the mill ceased operating after the weir burst, putty was produced here.
