Huguette

After breakfast we march through the warming day to the Tate. The beach is already crowded with wannabe surfers, but the gallery is quite empty.

I’m unfamiliar with most of the artists, except for some of the really well known names - Matisse, Picasso, Mondrian. The exhibition is of Huguette Caland, a French/Lebanese artist whose failure to break through in the USA had obscured her earlier triumphs in Beirut and Paris. The tour given by ex-headmaster Andrew was excellent - really putting her life and work into context.

A wander through the small St Ives streets, a pasty on an open-topped bus, and we’re in Penzance. Train to Euston, sleeper to Edinburgh. We both have work tomorrow. The holidays are over.
