Unexpected Garden Visitor

Just as I was about to head into the front garden for a much needed weeding, pruning and general tidying up session, I spotted something flitting around the back lawn. On closer inspection this turned out to be a Dragonfly.  I have a small pond, and often see damsel flies, but the nearest decent body of water is at least a mile away as the crow flies, so this was an unexpected delight.

According to the internet this is probably a female Southern Hawker, which does indeed hunt well away from water, and breeds in well-vegetated, small ponds, often in garden ponds. So fingers crossed for next year!

There was absolutely no chance for an "in flight" shot, but she did rest a few times in the shrubbery, when I managed this shot.
