Let the Dead Trees Stand.

George Monbiot recently published an article in the Guardian describing the various diseases affecting trees in Great Britain and much of Europe.

He also put forward the proposal that dead trees should be left standing as there is more life in a dead tree than a living tree.

Approximately 2000 species of animal rely on dead timber for their survival.

One of our neighbours is following this approach and here is a dead tree very close to us.

The extra provides a close up and an interesting close up.

I do leave some timber from pruning lying where it falls and some is stacked to form "insect hotels".
