The Journey

A statue in Durham City centre depicting six months carrying the open coffin of St Cuthbert.   St Cuthbert lived as a monk, bishop then hermit on Holy Island (Lindisfarne) off the north east coast of England.  He died in 687 AD.  His community fled the island in 792 AD following a Danish invasion.  The monks traveled around the North East of England for years with his body and settled in Durham in 995.  The fine cathedral grew from the Anglo Saxon church built to house Cuthbert's shrine.

The statue was made by a local sculptor called Fenwick Lawson.  He originally made it in wood but it was then cast in bronze.

I have attached a few more photos from my trip to Durham.
