Thingliness

Starting to put things in to the new dresser.
On this shelf, four champagne flutes. And a rather unusual glass vessel which was a gift from Tom and Lu several years ago. It has four drinking 'glasses' hung on integral glass hooks. Not conventional glasses - they each have an integral 'straw' through which you suck up your drink from the bottom of the glass. We use it very rarely, and then usually for home-made flavoured vodka. No idea what it's called but I like it, and it has a certain thingliness!

(Just come across thie word 'thingliness' in Lu's thesis, and had to use it! It's such a nice word that rolls off the tongue! Here it just means the quality of having existence or being a thing (definition from Collins English Dictionary). Lu used it in the sense of pertaining to the substance of a work, separate from what is conveyed.)
