Medieval Rood Screen

Although Devon has lost a great many of its old rood screens in its churches, there are a great many left.  The detail in them is exquisite and many have been restored.  These pictures were taken in St Disen, Bradninch, a small town with Anglo Saxon roots outside Exeter.  This screen was made before 1528 and the 52 painted panels added later in the same centrury. (They are at the base of the screen.)  Restored in the 19C.  They include the Temptation of Eve, the Annunciation and 12 sibyls or prophetesses.

St Disen's is also where the father of Daniel Boone was baptised on Christmas Day in 1696.  He sailed to America in 1717. (see extra photographs)
