If you can't beat them...

The Medieval Miller.

Clickychick had reason to visit Heron Mill and the first Friday in the month mill tours are run.  Extremely good value!  £5 coffee and biscuit before, one and a half hours tour then coffee and cake.  As they are in the run up to the 800th anniversary of the first record of milling on the site, the tour guide was dressed appropriately.  Here he is explaining how french mill stones were brought over in sections and assembled at the dock.  Assembled there as it would be too late if any parts were missing by the time they were transported all over England.

We followed the fascinating tour, with a visit to their Hydroelectricity plant.  The technology patented in 1912 is so efficient they provide all their own electricity and sell £80,000 pounds worth to the paper mill across the river.

Then across the road to Beetham nursery for a nice lunch and wander round plants we don't see at the other garden centres.
