Calne (Thursday 12th September 2019)

When in town yesterday I was pleased to find not one but three adult swans in The Wharf. I'm not sure if these are all from the same brood or if one is a parent, but I'm guessing they are cygnets from the last year or two. It is good to know that I am within walking distance of swans.
The Wharf is where the Calne branch of the Wilts and Berks canal and the River Marden co-exist for a few yards until the canal terminates and the river flows under the road and continues below The Beaches.
The Extra was taken a few yards further along at the start of the Town Gardens, and sadly the Shop To Let was the excellent New Wine Shop which will be much missed, along with its owner, nicknamed 'Ian Botham' by Refna, due to a certain resemblance.

Recorded on this day in 1975 this track from Elite Hotel was released as a single early in 1976 (though as a B-side in the US) and has always been a big favourite with me.
The song was written by Buck Owens and recorded by Buck Owens and the Buckaroos in 1964 as a B-side. Tom Brumley's pedal steel guitar on this track inspired Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead to learn to play pedal steel, which he played mostly with his second band, the New Riders Of The Purple Sage.
