Left Behind

I enjoy hearing the Cicadas'  songs at dawn and dusk. This is an 'Annual Cicada' exoskeleton. As the creatures grow, they vacate their outer 'skin' and I find them at this time of year on the trunks of pine trees at the dog park. The annual cicadas can spend one to nine years as underground larvae, emerging as adults during the summer months. There is another type of cicada called 'Periodic Cicadas'. They remain in larval stage for 13-17 years and then emerge all at once, overwhelming their predators.
Cicadas have been written about in literature since ancient times. They are enjoyed as a delicacy in various countries. In China their nymphs are deep-fried in Shandong cuisine. Yum! ;)
