Towards Mull from Kerrera

I’m cream-crackered. We walked to the Kerrera Ferry from the campsite in time for the 11 boat but as the safety rules have changed they only take 12 passengers at a time which meant, though the boat went to and fro, we didn’t get over till 12. Passengers stand and there is room for one vehicle.

The weather had been glorious all day so we really enjoyed our walk round the island. We headed south where there was the promise of a garden tearoom after 3 miles or so. Just before it we took a detour down to the coast to see a ruined castle and eat our packed lunch on the pebbley beach. Then Mr C realised we’d not have time for the tearoom if we wanted to get round the island before the last ferry. (I had been taking too many photos allegedly).

The next part of the route was more tricky being a rough path which became a burn going uphill or a bog. The views were tremendous. Mull, Lismore and the mainland. We stopped to watch some dolphins playing but didn’t manage to catch a photo. We carried on round the west side of the island which was much bleaker than the east, till we reached a croft, then it was a mile of very steep track. After than we went over the central hills. We saw ferries going from Mull to Oban and saw east to Ben Cruachan - it looked pretty scary from this distance but I didn’t whimper when we climbed it so it must look worse than it is.

Eventually we headed downhill and waited for the ferry. A young man was taking his van over. He showed us a wormlike creature swimming by the landing stage. Nobody had seen it before of knew what it was.

The mile back to our campsite almost finished me - over 10 miles today. Mr C poured the wine and we sat in outside till the sun went behind Kerrera.

We’d hoped to go to Staffa tomorrow but the wind is going to be gale force and the trip has been cancelled.
