The Amokura

The Mistress drove to Te Mahia this morning where we were picked up by SeaGypsy49 and taken over to her place in the Kenepuru Sounds.

We were treated to a tour of a 100 year old woolshed at Crail Bay, a shag colony, views to die for, and this amazing shipwreck of the Amokura, a ship that was launched in 1889, used to suppress the slave trade in the 1890s, and escorted the royal Yacht around the New Zealand Coast in 1901. She was taken over by the NZ Govt in 1905 and used as a Naval Training Ship until 1922 when she was sold to be used as a coal ship.

In 1953 she was sold and towed to Kenepuru Sounds to be used as a jetty. But never made it as a jetty and instead still lies where she was towed to.

The Mistress reckons shipwrecks make wonderful photography!
