A time for everything

Great night out!

Friday
Tonight, we drove downtown to the Aronoff Center, to see the Broadway musical Come From Away. The musical is set in the week following the September 11 attacks and tells the true story of what transpired when 38 planes were ordered to land unexpectedly in the small town of Gander in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The characters in the musical are based on (and in most cases share the names of) real Gander residents as well as some of the more than 6,000 stranded travelers they housed and fed over the next several days. The musical was written by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, who visited Gander on the tenth anniversary of the attacks, and interviewed locals and returning passengers. The couple translated some stories directly to the musical while others were merged for story purposes. The result is an incredibly moving, yet entertaining musical, which finds you laughing one minute, then with tears on your eyes five minutes later. The cast each play several roles, quickly donning a jacket or a hat to change character! We had first heard of it about a year ago from our choir director and his wife who had seen it in Toronto. I thoroughly recommend it if you have a chance to see it!
