A Piece of History

Freyjad's WidWed theme today is 'A piece of history' - a shoo-in really if you live where I do!  However, I wanted to blip something I hadn't tried before, so this morning I went up to the area of the Great Hall and law courts.  The Great Hall is the only piece of the Norman castle still standing, but just across the way are the foundations and underground passages belonging to a tower in the castle walls.

The mushily-worded info board says about them:
When Winchester was the capital of England, a great castle stood on this spot and from here the King of England ruled supreme across the dominion.
Now some 800 years later, all that remains is the Great Hall and these ruins of a tower from the castle walls.
These restored passageways in the basement of this tower, that led out to the great dry moat surrounding the castle, offer a glimpse of a world we can now only imagine.

I thought they might make a slightly different blip from the usual Winchester stuff - and, I admit, I wanted to get out of the rain - so here we are.  No filter was used, but perhaps this looks like the kind of drawing you might find in a 19thC travel guide.  That was the intention, anyway.

Oh, and one last piece of history associated with the mound the castle stood on.  It was made by a legion of Vespasian's soldiers in around 70AD to keep those wicked Wintonians in check.

Many thanks to Freyjad for hosting today's WideWednesday.

Am out tonight having supper with friends so will start commenting now and finish off in the morning.  Have a good one  xx
