Tortoise

Until this week, I'd never seen a tortoise in the wild. This one was crossing a busy road (very slowly) and was rescued by the driver of an Austrian tour bus.

Today we headed to the paths above Kalabaka to visit the Holy Trinity Monastery and St Stephen's Nunnery. I learned a lot about the symbolism of icons and Byzantine art. The monastery churches qre covered with paintings and photographs are not allowed so I can't show you what they're like (not that it stops people surreptitiously trying to take photos with their phones..one woman kept at it until an irritated nun insisted that she deleted all her images).

In the late afternoon  when the light was better, we ventured out again and that's when we encountered the tortoise. Another meal at the taverna and a chat with the owner about how his job is half psychology and half the provision of good food to customers. It's a family business and they work very hard. He said that they will close for the season in November and then he will get to spend time with his wife (Sofia works mornings and he works evenings so they are like ships that pass in the night.

Which reminds me that it's time for bed.

Goodnight :-)
