Troy Story

We have just got back from Carlisle, driving in the dark and rain . . . gone are those lovely light evenings. However, we have been to Stanwix Arts Theatre, part of the University, to one of the most absorbing and entertaining talks we have been to in a long, long time.

Natalie Hayne - classicist, writer, broadcaster . . . and comedian. She talked non-stop for well over an hour and held the large audience spellbound. Her telling of the whole (all 24 books) of the Iliad in 24 minutes was utterly amazing, whether you knew the book (like me) or did not (like Gordon). She talked a little about her new book - A Thousand Ships, which tells the story of the Trojan War with the women taking the leading roles that they always did have before being pushed into the background. I am about to read it and Gordon is about to read the Iliad. Result!

And after that marathon of a performance she appeared to sign books and talk to people.

Although this was part of Carlisle’s Book Festival, Borderlines, she is actually on a tour. Catch her if you can . . . fantastic.
