The Sunflower Lover

The Arboretum's sunflowers have gone to seed, and the birds and chipmunks are very happy about that. It was an overcast morning, threatening rain, but I stopped for a few minutes to visit them. I heard a rustling in the plants near me and looked up to catch this surprising sight: a chipmunk, sitting at the very tippy-top of the sunflower, looking right down at me!

The chipmunk climbed around the top of the plant for a while, nibbling on things. Then it chopped off the heart of a sunflower bloom, carried it down the stem in its mouth, and sat on the ground, where it tore it apart and ate it with great zest and abandon. One could do far worse than to be a lover of sunflowers!

The soundtrack song has to be about a climb. So here is an oldie but a goodie from Dan Fogelberg, The Higher You Climb.
