A Rainy Day at Wickwar Quarry

The quarry near our village is expanding... Earlier this year it celebrated 100 years of operation, so it's a long time neighbour and offers some decent skilled employment but it's always something of a concern.

I chair a liaison group that includes public from several villages, local parish councillors and county council officials as well as quarry staff and managers, and over the years we've done what we can to work together for the best of all the community.

Today was an Open Day, in part to prepare us for a new planning application for a new phase of development. Sadly, I don't think attendance was high (there's another opportunity tomorrow) because the weather was so poor. Janet and I had a very interesting afternoon however, being escorted around the various plant and through the quarries themselves.

Charfield is located on very interesting geology, and that was reflected in some of the rock samples that were exhibited in the display room. Janet was so full of questions, they may have realised she was an ex- primary teacher. I kept my head down, geeking only very slightly as I examined the control computers...
